Hot off Rutgers University Press this month is Unsafe Words, a look at queer sexual consent and gender violence amidst the #MeToo reckoning. Queerful Editor-in-Chief Winnie McCroy sat down with writers Trevor Hoppe and Shantel Buggs to explore what ethical sex looks like in our community, where ‘enthusiastic consent’ can range from a nod between men hooking up in Fire Island, or a prearranged ‘safe word’ between players in a BD/SM scene. And they show how queer communities might better prevent and respond to same-gender harassment and sexual violence outside of a criminal justice system that rarely protects them. Q
