Florida Expands “Don’t Say Gay” Law to Include Students Through High School

Florida made headlines for expanding its "Don't Say Gay" law through to high school. The original bill only applied to grades K-4 and  The law prohibits teachers from discussing homosexuality or any other non-heterosexual behavior or identity in the classroom. This expansion of the law is a concerning move that restricts free speech, reinforces discrimination, and puts the mental health of LGBTQ+ students at risk.

The expansion of the law bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity unless required by existing state standards or as part of reproductive health lessons, which students can opt out of and parent permission is required. Of course these are the years when students are becoming aware of their sexuality and have the most questions.

This law is not only a violation of free speech but also promotes discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. By prohibiting discussion of homosexuality or any other non-heterosexual behavior or identity, the law reinforces the idea that LGBTQ+ individuals are somehow abnormal or deviant. This sends a message to LGBTQ+ students that they are not welcome in Florida schools, which is unacceptable.

Moreover, this law puts the mental health of LGBTQ+ students at risk. By prohibiting any discussion of LGBTQ+ issues in the classroom, the law reinforces the idea that being LGBTQ+ is something to be ashamed of or hidden. This can have a significant impact on the mental health of LGBTQ+ students, who may feel isolated, misunderstood, and unsupported. It can also make it more difficult for these students to seek help or resources when they need it.

The "Don't Say Gay" law is not only harmful to LGBTQ+ students but also to all students who benefit from a comprehensive education. A well-rounded education should include discussion of all issues and perspectives, including those related to sexuality and gender identity. By prohibiting any discussion of these issues, the law limits students' exposure to important topics and prevents them from developing a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Florida's expansion of the "Don't Say Gay" law to high school students is a concerning move that restricts free speech, reinforces discrimination, and puts the mental health of LGBTQ+ students at risk. It is time for Florida to repeal this archaic law and create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
